What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are a fixed prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth, thereby “bridging” the gaps in your smile. There are several types of dental bridges, each supported by adjacent natural teeth, abutment teeth, or implants. The false tooth (or pontic) is fused with crowns on either side of the gap, and the entire assembly is then cemented to your natural teeth or implants.

What to Expect During Your Dental Bridge Procedure

Getting a dental bridge at Alexandra Hills Dental is usually done over two or three visits, and we’ll talk you through every step before we start. At your first appointment, we examine your mouth and check the health of the teeth either side of the gap. If there’s any decay or gum issues, we sort that first so your bridge has a strong foundation. We may also take an X-ray to check the supporting teeth and jawbone.

Here’s how the rest of the process usually runs:

  • The abutment teeth are shaped to make room for the crowns

  • An impression is taken and sent to the dental lab to build your custom bridge

  • A temporary bridge is fitted so you’re not left with a gap while you wait

  • At your next visit, the permanent bridge is checked for fit, bite, and colour, then cemented in place

Local anaesthetic is used throughout, so the procedure itself is comfortable.

What Are The Advantages Of Bridge?

  • Aesthetically, they appear like natural tooth
  • As they are supported by real tooth, they feel like real tooth when eating.
  • Normally only require 2~3 appointments.
  • They normally last between 10~15 years provided they are well looked after.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Bridge?

  • Teeth becomes sensitive to hot and cold for a few weeks after the bridge is inserted.
  • Teeth either side of the gap needs to be trimmed to create space for the bridge.

  • A daily good oral hygiene routine need to be followed to prevent food accumulating around the bridge.

Once your bridge is in, looking after it properly is what keeps it lasting. The crowns sit joined together, so regular floss won’t pass between the bridged teeth the way it does with natural ones. That means a slightly different cleaning routine, and we’ll show you exactly how to do it before you leave the practice. Good habits at home, paired with regular check-ups and hygiene visits with us, are the best way to protect your investment and the natural teeth supporting the bridge.

A solid aftercare routine usually includes:

  • Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, including around the gum line of the bridge

  • Cleaning under the pontic using superfloss, floss threaders, or interdental brushes

  • Going easy on hard foods like ice, boiled lollies, and hard nuts that can chip or loosen the bridge

  • Booking in for routine check-ups so we can spot any issues early
